The knowyourmeme.com released information on Blue Waffle Disease been deadly citing it is not a joke and that someone had witnessed a girl they knew die from the disease.  The symptoms given included the information of waffle-like growth around the vagina causing it to discharge pus. However, all this was a joke and a myth that has circulated in high school classrooms for a while.  On April, pranksters brought back the legendary disease to the attention of a New York woman councilor, Kathy McBride who ended up calling an impromptu meeting with the national health department.  It was an embarrassing moment. However, she would have made the most out of the situation been that April is a National STD Education and Awareness Month.

The common unknown STDs

Although no STD that can turn genitals blue as explained by the pranksters, there is one with more cases than a combination of common STDs like Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis yet most people are not aware.  Trichomoniasis often called trich is an infection affecting both men and women.  Women who show signs of trich assume it to be a yeast infection because of similar symptoms such as burning, itching, swelling and presence of a thick discharge.  Those who do not show the signs pass the virus to their partners unknowingly adding up to an estimated 7-8 million cases of trich in the world annually.

A new survey that shows that one out of five women is aware of trich and only six can pronounce it correctly according to The American Sexual Health Association (ASHA).  However, the survey ranked it as the least STD while it’s the vice versa.  According to CDC, the only STD that has high numbers than trich is HPV whose estimation is about 14 million people annually. According to ASHA, trich is treatable using antibiotics; the lack of treatment results to high susceptibility to getting infected with HIV.  It may give rise to early childbirths and low-weighing babies.

The trichomoniasis treatment process

Getting STD test is the first step in treating this infection. If the symptoms show and you think it’s a yeast infection, it is advisable to get tested to deal with the right STD. It is important to go for STD test  or screening for both the common STDs and uncommon, especially if you are sexually active. The doctors collect vaginal fluid when diagnosing trich, and if is detected, antibiotics area administered for treatment.  Making sure your partner is safe too is vital.

There are also preventive measures you can take to avoid contracting the malady. If you can’t abstain, then sticking to one partner is an ideal approach. Having multiple partners is an easy way to getting infected.  The main idea is to practice safely. Condoms should be everybody’s best friend. They are the best weapon t protect you and your partner from contracting trichomoniasis.
